Cleaner Oceans for a better world

Indian Ocean Gyre Cleaning Project (IOGCP) an initiative by Indian teenager Varun Saikia

Oceancleanerz is a startup/ project aiming towards cleaning the river Ganga and Indian Ocean Gyre (IOGCP- Indian Ocean Gyre Cleaning Project) by Varun Saikia. Varun invented Flipper and Makara which AI enhaced automated waterbodies cleaning device that can collect from 150 kgs to 500 tons ( if scaled up) of floating plastic wastes and he is passionately working on this since  12 years of age. Varun  who is now 15 yrs has won the National Award in Science Fairs and has won internationally Outstanding Achievement Award from American Meteorological Society- Massachusetts.  Under IOGCP Varun Saikia is bringing together volunteers who share the same passion and wish to help towards this mission to see cleaner healthy waterbodies from all across the Asian continents. He is also working with the Government bodies to implement his devices for  cleaning of rivers and lakes in cities of India.
Be a volunteer and support the voice. Together we can reach out to the government authorities and work towards a sustainable solution by having cleaner waterbodies.

The Oceans need YOU

According to the United Nations, at least 800 species worldwide are affected by marine debris, and as much as 80 percent of that litter is plastic. It is estimated that up to 13 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year-the equivalent of a rubbish or garbage truck load’s worth every minute. Plastic waste kills up to a million seabirds a year. As with sea turtles, when seabirds ingest plastic, it takes up room in their stomachs, sometimes causing starvation. Many seabirds are found dead with their stomachs full of this waste. Scientists estimate that 60 percent of all seabird species have eaten pieces of plastic, a figure they predict will rise to 99 percent by 2050.

FLIPPER is designed by Varun Saikia to clean up the polluted gyres of the world. It is an automated device with a detachable tail netbin that can collect 700-800 tons plus floating plastic waste.  A ship is capable of towing atleast 700-800 tons per barge. The FLIPPER can be attached to any twin hull ship. Its ultrasonic sensor will keep marine life away from the device and the ship. The automated device is designed to collect data from the oceans to determine the pathway of plastic waste into the oceans. This device can collect live data that can be useful to many marine industries. 100 such FLIPPERS  modeled on working ships if deployed can clean the great pacific garbage patch in less than a year's time span . We aim to clean the Indian Ocean Garbage Patch.

The Indian Ocean garbage patch, discovered in 2010, is a gyre of marine litter suspended in the upper water column of the central Indian Ocean, specifically the Indian Ocean Gyre, one of the five major oceanic gyres. The patch does not appear as a continuous debris field. As with other patches in each of the five oceanic gyres,The concentration of particle debris has been estimated to be approximately 10,000 plastic particles per square kilometer. The Indian Ocean has one trillion pieces of plastic floating around. To solve this problem Ocean Cleanerz has started the Indian Ocean Gyre Cleaning Project by bringing like-minded people with similar intentions from across the continent together. Join Ocean Cleanerz Today and be a part of this cause.

Mountain Lake

Lakes & Ponds

There are ponds and lakes in every city, town, and village which serves as a source of water for the residents. But unfortunately, even the ponds and lakes are polluted. People dump their wastes in the ponds and lakes, the throw cultural wastes, and since these water bodies are stagnant hence the presence of these garbages causes the break out of water borne diseases. Also, the fishes and other marine animals present in the ponds and lakes die consuming these wastes. Therefore, to clean these water bodies Ocean Cleanerz has created a device called Makara, which is a working device.

The Ganges tolerates domestic waste such as plastic waste, untreated industrial waste, and pollution during religious events. Every day 1.7 billion litres of such waste run into the river. Near about 89 million litres of waste is disposed of in the river daily. The Ganges is one of the most polluted rivers in the world and it is second on the list of the plastic input in the oceans by Rivers, and as of research in 2015 it has dumped about 115,000 tonnes of plastic waste into the Indian Ocean which is increasing by the day and polluting our oceans even more.

So, to tackle this problem Ocean Cleanerz has created FLIPPER to collect the floating plastic waste from The Ganges eventually stopping it from entering The Indian Ocean.

My Plans

Plastic debris accumulated at the Indian Ocean Gyre located in the south Asian region. Ocean Cleanerz plans to call like minded volunteers across Asia who share similar sentiments to join in as Ocean Cleanerz for a cleaner Eco system. We plan to clean the Indian ocean Gyre, together with the support of volunteers across the world.

To begin with this purpose we aim to start with rivers and lakes. My mission is to initiate the cleaning of the river Ganga, and all the polluted water bodies of India. Also, we are in talking terms with the Hon' CM of Assam for using my devices to clean River Brahmaputra too!
