A 16-year-old innovator from India has designed advanced robotic systems aimed at cleaning up plastic waste from the oceans. Driven by a passion for environmental conservation, this young mind is harnessing technology to tackle one of the world's most pressing pollution problems.
A recent report highlights that India generates over 3.5 million tons of plastic waste annually, much of which ends up in rivers and oceans. Experts warn this growing crisis threatens marine life, fisheries, and coastal communities unless urgent action is taken to reduce plastic use and improve waste management systems.
At 17, Varun Saikia from Vadodara designed 'Flipper', an AI-powered vessel that detects and removes plastic from water bodies. His innovation has earned him a government patent and a scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University.
